Dutch star Femke Bol broke 400m world record at the World Athletics Indoor Championships on Saturday, becoming one of three reigning Wanda Diamond League champions to claim gold in Glasgow.
Bol clocked 49.17 in Scotland, comfortably beating her own previous world record of 49.24 to claim her first world indoor title. As well as cementing her status as one of the best in the world over the 400m flat, the win also provides the perfect springboard for this year's Diamond League season, where Bol hopes to claim a third successive title in the 400m hurdles.
Two other reigning Diamond Trophy holders also claimed gold, with Mondo Duplantis clearing 6.05m to defend his title in the men's pole vault and Christian Coleman taking the men's 60m title with a world-leading 6.41.
"This was the hardest I have ever worked," said Duplantis after a gruelling night on which he attempted, but fell short of another world record at 6.24m.
Coleman, meanwhile, edged past double outdoor world champion and gold medal favourite Noah Lyles to to take his second world indoor title. The American remains a thorn in the side of compatriot Lyles, whom he also defeated by a whisker in last year's 100m Wanda Diamond League Final in Eugene.
“I had a lot of confidence in myself coming in. You have to feel confident in yourself. I set my mind on letting my body do what I have been doing in practice and I came out with a win. I can look forward to the rest of the summer," said Coleman, who is eyeing a third career Diamond Trophy this year.
Other reigning Diamond League champions fell just short of gold in Glasgow. Katie Moon and Sanghyeok Woo took bronze in the women's pole vault and men's high jump respectively while Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Gudaf Tsegay had to settle for silver in the women's high jump and 3000m.
Moon was beaten by 23-year-old British star Molly Caudery, who cleared 4.80m to delight the home crowd and take surprise gold. Hamish Kerr, who claimed his first ever Diamond League win in Stockholm last year, defeated series champion Woo with a world-leading 2.36m.
Tsegay was unable to channel the form which saw her smash the outdoor 5000m world record at the Wanda Diamond League Final last year, coming in second behind the USA's Elle St. Pierre, who took gold with a championship record of 8:20.87.
Mahuchikh was narrowly beaten by long-time rival Nicola Olyslagers, the Australian clearing 1.99m to the Ukrainian's 1.97m. The two women, who took three victories each en route to last year's Diamond League Final, will no doubt resume their enthralling rivalry once again on the Road to the Final this year.
Several 2022 Wanda Diamond League champions also picked up gold medals at the weekend. Ryan Crouser rampaged to victory in the shot put with a championship record of 22.77m, while Greek star Miltiadis Tentoglou won the long jump with 8.22m. There was also a championship record in the men's 60m hurdles, where Grant Holloway equalled his own mark of 7.29.
