Reigning Wanda Diamond League discus champion Kristjan Čeh will look to extend his long winning streak in the series when he takes on longstanding rival and Olympic champion Daniel Stahl at the tenth leg of the 2023 campaign in London on July 23rd.
Čeh – who threw the joint fourth furthest throw in history at a meeting in Estonia on Friday at 71.86m - has two Diamond League wins to his name so far in 2023 after victories in Doha and Rabat. This follows on from his success in the Wanda Diamond League Final in 2022. He also has experience of winning on British soil after securing victory at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham last year.
The Slovenian has now won every single one of the last eight Diamond League competitions in a run stretching back to the start of last season, and has broken the series record twice in that time.
Ståhl won his first Olympic gold in Tokyo two years ago and has a superb CV to his name. The 2019 world champion has won the Diamond League Final on three occasions during his career, winning twice at the London meeting in 2017 and 2019.
Čeh said, “I am very excited to be competing in London for the first time next month. I have started my season very well with wins in the Diamond League meetings in Doha and Rabat, so I want to keep my good form and momentum going throughout the summer season.
“The field is world class so it will be great preparation ahead of August’s World Athletics Championships. The Diamond League meetings provide great competition for all the discus throwers, so it will be a great contest for the British crowd to watch.”
Others in a star-studded discus field include Lithuania's Andrius Gudzius, who won the world title in London back in 2017, and Tokyo silver medallist Simon Pettersen.
The Wanda Diamond League London is the tenth leg of athletics' premier one-day meeting series. The WDL comprises 14 of the most prestigious events in global track and field. Athletes compete for points at the 13 series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final in Eugene on 16th-17th September.
