Jakob Ingebrigtsen has already qualified for the Wanda Diamond League Final, but there will still be plenty at stake when he competes at the penultimate meeting of the season in Brussels on September 8th.
The Norwegian middle distance ace will attack the world record over 2000m at Allianz Memorial Van Damme just a week before he goes about defending his Diamond League title in Eugene.
The current 2000m world record of 4:44.79 is one of the oldest track records in athletics, having been set by Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj in Berlin in 1999.
It would be a first official outdoor world record for the 22-year-old Norwegian, who clocked a world best performance of 7:54.10 over two miles at the Paris Diamond League last month.
Ingebrigtsen is also the current world indoor record holder over 1500m and the Diamond League record holder over one mile and two miles. He won his first Diamond League title in the 1500m last September, and has stormed to four successive wins and three meeting records on the circuit in 2023 so far.
The 2000m will replace the 1500m on the Brussels programme, with Diamond League points counting towards the 1500m qualification standings.
The Wanda Diamond League is the premier one-day meeting series in athletics. It comprises 14 of the most prestigious events in global track and field. Athletes compete for points at the 13 series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final in Eugene on 16th-17th September.
