Olympic and Wanda Diamond League champion Faith Kipyegon will continue her 1500m Diamond Trophy defence in Rome at the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala this Friday.
The Kenyan star returns to the meeting where she first broke the 1500m world record in 2023 as she looks to build on her Olympic success and secure qualification for the Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on September 13th-14th.
After she rewrote the history books with world records in three different disciplines last season, Kipyegon has continued her astonishing form in 2024, most notably with a third successive Olympic gold medal in Paris.
Her only Diamond League appearance of the season to date was also in Paris, where she broke her own 1500m world record with a magnificent 3:49.04.
Currently 11th in the standings, the Kenyan still needs another big performance in Rome if she is to qualify for the final and defend the Diamond League title she won in Eugene last year.
She will go up against a strong field at the Stadio Olimpico, including in-form Ethiopian Diribe Welteji and Italian star Nadia Batocletti.
The Wanda Diamond League is the premier one-day meeting series in athletics. It comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field. Athletes compete for points at the 14 series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on 13th-14th September.
