The 14th Wanda Diamond League season comes to a close in Eugene this weekend, with world champions such as Noah Lyles, Sha'Carri Richardson and Mondo Duplantis hoping to end their season with yet another international title.
As well as a chance to win the Diamond Trophy, the Diamond League Final has traditionally also proven a good place to make athletics history. So ahead of the action in Eugene, we take a look back at six of the greatest moments in the history of the series finale.
2012 - Merritt breaks the world record
The list of athletes who have broken a world record on the Diamond League circuit grows every year, but only one has ever managed to do so in the final. Aries Merritt's astonishing 12.80 in the 110m hurdles in Brussels in 2012 was the first world record in the series history, and also produced one of its most memorable celebrations.
2014 - Barshim almost breaks the world record
Mutaz Essa Barshim has three Diamond Trophies to his name, the first of which he won in Brussels in 2014. And what a win it was. In a moment which went down in high jump history, the Qatari star cleared 2.43m, coming within just two centimetres of Javier Sotomayor's world record.
2017 - Farah's dramatic farewell
When Mo Farah returned to the meet hotel in Zurich in 2017, he was clutching the Diamond Trophy like a babe in arms. It was the first time that the British legend had won the Diamond League title, and he had done so in his final ever track race. Not only that, but he had also prevailed in one of the most dramatic finishes of any 5000m in the history of the sport. It was high drama in Zurich, and a fitting farewell for the long distance legend.
2018 - Ibargüen does the double
Colombian triple jump star Caterine Ibargüen is one of a very select group of athletes who have won two Diamond Trophies in a single season, and she is also the only one to have done so on two consecutive days. In 2018, with the Brussels and Zurich finals taking place over just two days, Ibargüen travelled to both meets and won at both of them. After clearing 14.56m in the triple jump in Zurich, she hopped over to Belgium to mark 6.80m in the long jump and make it two Diamond Trophies in two evenings. Not bad for a weekend's work.
2018 - Kipruto loses a shoe
Conseslus Kipruto's title win in 2018 has a strong claim to being the greatest moment in Diamond League history. The Kenyan legend was barely a minute and a half into the steeplechase final in Zurich when he accidentally kicked off a shoe. Unfazed, he battled on, eventually overtaking Soufiane El Bakkali on the home straight to pull off one of the most astonishing victories in the history of athletics.
2019 - Warholm breaks the 47-second barrier
Karsten Warholm was already the reigning world champion when he won his first Diamond Trophy in 2019, but the Norwegian's victory in Zurich that year confirmed him beyond doubt as one of the best 400m hurdlers ever. With 46.92, Warholm became only the third man in history to break the 47-second barrier, a feat he would repeat a few more times in the coming years.
