Stockholm: Five things to look out for

Pole vault world record holder and Diamond League champion Mondo Duplantis got his quest for a third successive title off to a good start in Oslo last month, but Stockholm is where it really gets serious for the Swedish star. The last time he competed in front of his home crowd, Duplantis set a Diamond League record of 6.16m and the Stockholm fans will be hoping for more of the same this time around. It's a high bar to beat, but Duplantis has made it his business to beat high bars in recent years, and with the home crowd behind him, there is always the chance of something special.

Fellow Scandinavian Karsten Warholm certainly knows the value of a home crowd after his record-breaking run in Oslo last month. The Norwegian clocked 46.52 at the Bislett Games, smashed his own series record and getting his comeback off to a dream start after he missed most of last season with an injury. Warholm is now on a mission to regain his Diamond League title, and another win in Stockholm would be a huge step towards qualification for the final. 

The women's discus has often been something of a foregone conclusion in Diamond League seasons gone by, with Sandra Perkovic's long period of dominance giving way to a more recent hegemony from the USA's Valarie Allman. That might be about to change, however, after Jorinde Van Klinken staked her claim as a title contender with a surprise win in Oslo last month. The 23-year-old Dutch star already has a personal best of over 70 metres, and she has a chance to prove herself against Allman and Perkovic once again in Stockholm. 

One of the biggest surprises of the season so far was Larissa Iapichino's victory in the long jump in Florence back on June 2nd. Home advantage she may have had, but the Italian was still not expected in a field which included Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo and Diamond League champion Ivana Vuleta. Both Mihambo and Vuleta will be out for revenge in Stockholm, while Iapichino will want to prove that her victory on home soil was more than a one off. 

Iapichino's compatriot Gianmarco Tamberi will make his first appearance on the circuit in Stockholm, and the reigning Diamond League high jump champion has some catching up to do if he is to make the final once again this year. American rival Juvaughn Harrison, whom Tamberi beat by the slenderest of margins in last year's final, already has two wins on the board and is looking increasingly like the favourite for the high jump title in 2023. With Harrison absent in Stockholm, Tamberi will want to stake his claim to the throne with a strong showing in Sweden.
