Olympic high jump champion and two-time Diamond Trophy winner Gianmarco Tamberi will compete at the Herculis EBS Monaco meeting this July, returning to a city where he once made a bittersweet start to life at the top level.
Tamberi celebrated his first ever Diamond League win in Monaco back in 2016, but his joy was cut short as he sustained a freak injury which saw him miss out on that year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The charismatic Italian battled back to the top of his discipline over the following years, eventually claiming a fairytale joint gold medal alongside his friend and rival Mutaz Essa Barshim at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
He has since been one of the standout performers in the men's high jump, taking the Wanda Diamond League title in 2021 and 2022, and the world title in Budapest last August.
Tamberi has returned to the Monaco Diamond League several times since 2016, but has yet to claim another victory in the Stade Louis II. He will be out to set the record straight on July 12th, in a meeting which comes just weeks before his Olympic title defence in Paris.
Having lost his Diamond League title to South Korean rival Woo Sanghyeok last season, the Italian will also be keen to pick up valuable points and guarantee his spot at this year's season finale in Brussels.
The Wanda Diamond League is the premier one-day meeting series in athletics. It comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field. Athletes compete for points at the 14 series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on 13th-14th September.
