Italian high jump legend Gianmarco Tamberi will return to the Stadio Olimpico for the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala on August 30th, as he and other global superstars continue their Wanda Diamond League campaigns after the Olympic Games.
Just three months after he jumped 2.37m to take the gold medal at the European Championships in the same stadium, Tamberi returns to Rome to continue his pursuit of a third career Diamond Trophy.
Diamond League champion in 2021 and 2022, the Italian is hoping to regain his title this season, but will face a tough test at the Golden Gala against world silver medallist Juvaughn Harrison and this season's standout performer Hamish Kerr.
Several other global superstars are also expected in Rome, which for many athletes will be the last chance to earn Diamond League points and qualify for the series final in Brussels on September 13th and 14th.
Diamond League 5000m champion Gudaf Tsegay will be in 1500m action as she eyes another Diamond Trophy in 2024. The Ethiopian, who broke Faith Kipyegon's 5000m world record at last year's final in Eugene, is the third-fastest woman ever over the shorter distance, having clocked 3:50.30 at the Diamond League season opener in Xiamen in April.
In Rome, she faces newly crowned European champions Ciara Mageean of Ireland and Nadia Batocletti of Italy.
Ethiopian fans will also be able to get behind former Diamond League champions Hagos Gebrhiwet and Yomif Kejelcha when they take on Kenyan rival Jacob Krop in the men's 5000m.
Gebrhiwet in particular looks in fine form this season, having missed out on the world record by just over a second with his impressive 12:36.73 at the Oslo Diamond League in May.
There will also be plenty of African talent on show in the sprints, as Botswana's Letsile Tebogo and Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala face off in the men's 100m and Ivorian legend Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith headlines the women's 200m alongside British star Daryll Neita and American Mackenzie Long.
Italian stars Larissa Iapichino and Andy Diaz are already confirmed for the women's long jump and men's triple jump respectively, with Germany's Malaika Mihambo and Burkina Faso's Hugues Fabrice Zango out to dash their hopes of delighting the home crowd.
Another home favourite, Zane Weir, will be hoping to spring a surprise in the men's shot put, where he takes on three-time Diamond League champion Tom Walsh.
In the women's pole vault, joint world champion Nina Kennedy will be joined by British world indoor champion Molly Caudery and Swiss star Angelica Moser.
The Wanda Diamond League is the premier one-day meeting series in athletics. It comprises 15 of the most prestigious events in global track and field. Athletes compete for points at the 14 series meetings in a bid to qualify for the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final in Brussels on 13th-14th September.
